Things You Should Know about Galvanized Fencing

May. 12, 2021

Generally, galvanized wire fence is a modern security fencing material made of high strength steel wire. Galvanized fence can be installed to frighten and deter aggressive perimeter intruders, with cut and razor blades installed at the top of the wall, and a special design that makes climbing and access extremely difficult. Wires and strips are galvanized to prevent corrosion.

Galvanized barbed wire is now widely used in many countries in military areas, prisons, detention centers, government buildings and other national security installations. In recent years, it has become apparent that wire fencing has become the most popular premium fencing, not only for military and national security applications, but also for hut and social fencing and other private buildings.

Why Galvanized Fencing is Important?

Wood fences can rot. Stone fences can break. And barbed wire fences? They can rust. At Neweast Yilong, we see fencing as an investment. You work hard to ensure the safety of your animals. To protect what's important to you, we make fences that can withstand all types of weather conditions. However, even a small amount of rainfall can damage steel at the atomic level. Rust can appear on bare steel due to the oxygen molecules that produce iron oxide. This is why fences are galvanized for long-lasting performance.

What is galvanizing?

Galvanizing is the process of coating metals (such as steel and iron) with zinc. The minerals act as a barrier to factors such as humidity, salt air, pollution, chemicals, dust and other abrasive air qualities.

Fences are galvanized using a process called "hot dipping".  The steel wire is immersed in a molten zinc bath where it reacts to form a uniform coating around the wire. As a result, a shiny layer of zinc remains on the surface of the steel. Since the wire will inevitably be scraped in the field, the zinc coating will be the first line of defense. The surface of the zinc coating will sacrifice itself to prevent moisture and corrosive elements from entering the steel.

What type of galvanizing should I use?

The longevity of a fence is determined by several factors. Weather conditions, air quality, proper installation techniques, and of course the amount of galvanizing all contribute to longevity. No two farms are the same, and no two fencing needs are the same.

Galvanized Coating Weight

The commercial category of galvanized contains a minimum amount of zinc. It provides the most affordable fence coating. However, there is no minimum ASTM requirement for commercial (conventional) galvanizing.  Fence panels, poultry netting and other welded metal fencing are primarily used at the commercial level.

The Effects of Rust

Keep in mind that all wire fences will eventually succumb to rust. Fortunately, plating greatly reduces that process. Rust does not necessarily mean a fence failure. In most cases, a fence with rust is more than adequate. How long a fence will last depends on the conditions of its use and the amount of galvanization.

Be sure to contact galvanized fence supplier to determine which type of galvanizing is best for your application.
